Camp Riverbend is a children's summer
day camp located in Warren Township, in Somerset County, New Jersey,
(near Berkeley Heights). For next season, our dates are Monday,
June 30 through Friday, August 15, 2008. Camp is
closed Friday, July 4. Camp runs on weekdays only, from 9:30 a.m. to
4:15 p.m. Counselors are expected to be present for the entire camp
day, and for the entire 7 week camp season.
In addition, staff
training is mandatory, and is scheduled for:
Thursday, June 19: 6-9 p.m.
Friday, June 20: 4-9 p.m.
Saturday, June 21: 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.
Sunday, June 22: 9 a.m. -12:30 p.m.
Since we are a day
camp, we are unable to provide lodging or meals for staff members. You
should have a place to stay within about 20 miles of camp. Camper and
counselors bring their own lunch to camp each day. Most counselors come
to camp on a camp bus, either as a bus driver (which requires a special
Commercial Driver's License) or as a bus rider (supervising campers on
the bus). Bus drivers and riders get extra money for doing these jobs,
on top of their regular counselor salary.
Camp Riverbend is
family owned and operated (since 1962). There are about 185 staff
members. Our main philosophy is one of participation, not competition.
Our goal is for each child to learn and try his or her best, in all
areas. Campers and counselors participate daily in sports, crafts,
performing arts, nature and environment and swimming.
Salary levels vary according to your education level, your experience
working with children in a variety of settings, and your skill level.
College students (just graduating high school) start around $1700 for the 36-and-a-half day season,
which includes training. Students just graduating college start around
$2100. Teachers' salaries are based on their experience and background.
Our youngest counselors have just graduated high school. If you are
still in high school, please contact us in your senior year.
There are three
basic types of jobs at Camp Riverbend:
|
|
Group
Counselors
work with one group of 18 children
all summer (all the children are in one grade). The group counselors
plan activities for their group, and accompany the campers to activity
instructors (such as arts and crafts), where they assist. Group
counselors also assist the waterfront staff at swimming lessons and free
swim time. Teachers are group heads, and they supervise 1-2 college
students as their assistants.
|
Specialty Instructors
teach specific skills related to
their activity to 7 groups of campers daily. Some of our specialty
programs are arts & crafts, ceramics, woodworking, baseball, canoeing,
international games and cooking, drama, music, soccer, etc. Group
counselors assist specialty instructors during their group's sessions.
Applicants must have experience
teaching in their specialty area. Some positions (low ropes challenge
course, canoeing, archery) also require that the instructor have, or be
willing to earn, special certifications. Camp Riverbend will pay the fee
to enroll you in a course to earn the required certification. |
Waterfront Staff
teach swimming lessons every morning
(about 6-10 campers in a swim group) and lifeguard every afternoon.
Applicants must have Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor
certifications, or be willing to earn these certifications before camp
begins. Camp Riverbend will pay part of the fee for these courses.
